Cartoons from East Germany with Live English Dubbing by Flula Borg

Saturday Morning Indie Cartoons

The DEFA Studio for Animation Film was founded in Dresden, East Germany, in 1955. Over the next two decades, the state-owned studio became one of the most modern animation centers in Europe. By the time it closed its doors in 1992, it had produced almost 2000 animation films for cinemas and television and these spanned all classic animation techniques, including cartoons, silhouette and puppet films, shadow plays, claymation and stop-motion animation. Representing a high level of craftsmanship and creativity, DEFA’s animation films fascinated national and international cinema and television audiences and were shown at film festivals all over the world.

For the last 25 years, the German Institute for Animated Film (DIAF) in Dresden and the DEFA Film Library at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have been fostering awareness and distribution of this unique collection of animated films.

In celebration of this silver anniversary, the Mammoth Lakes Film Festival is presenting a retrospective devoted to the legacy of East German animation. Seven selected shorts, produced by the first generation of directors at the DEFA Studio for Animation Film, give a taste of the fantastic, magical world of animated films from a vanished country.
